Formalisme
In the formal approach a painting is not a medium to convey a story or the representation of a thought or reality. The content is about the formal aspects of a painting such as the dimensions of the work, pictorial elements and materials: everything a painting exists of in intrinsic sense. Viewer interpretation of image is not applicable and knowledge of art history is not required. The audience is persuaded to look at the works by the quality of color and material in pure form.
This website presents a photo documentary of
formalisme.nl, the solo exhibition of paintings by Marco Rump which was held from June 20 till July 8 - 2012 in the
Oude Kerk – Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Marco Rump
(1971) works as an artist in Amsterdam since 1996. In the paintings of Marco Rump the image is completely abstract: color and shape have no relationship to the world outside the painting. The shape of the carrier and the properties of the material determine the work. The paint does not mimic the color of a flower, skin or air, or in brushstrokes the texture of fabric or the gloss of glass: it's just paint. Pictorial elements refer to themselves, the work represents itself. This results in the aesthetic experience of direct eye contact with color and matter. The finishing of the painting is an essential part of the work, with this design, the works are signed.
